1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. Masonry stain system specified herein is a penetrating,
permanent, non-fading liquid solution, resisting
ultraviolet light degradation, flaking, or peeling from
the substrate, and allowing moisture vapor transmission.
The system shall not appreciably change the masonry
surface texture or leave a glossy finish.
B. Liquid water repellents specified herein are clear, deep-
penetrating, non-film forming, non-silicone, non-
yellowing chemical solutions.
1.4 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300.
B. Product Data: Three copies of manufacturer's current
technical data sheets for materials.
NOTE ** Delete the following paragraph if samples are not
required.
C. Samples:
1. Opaque: One draw down of each specified color.
2. Semi-Transparent: Substrate with two transparent
variations.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Installer Qualifications: Minimum five years experience
regularly engaged and specializing in the application of
specialty surface treatments to exterior wall substrates.
B. Pre-Installation Meetings:
1. Before Application: Installer and Manufacturer's
Representative shall inspect surfaces to be treated,
noting in writing to the Architect, deficiencies or
flaws in the substrate construction which would
affect the performance or appearance of the masonry
stain.
2. Beginning of Application: Manufacturer's
Representative shall assure utilization of proper
equipment, verify material quantities, and supervise
material application techniques upon a substantial
wall section. This wall section shall act as a
comparative standard for the project.
C. Installer shall not proceed with material application
until all deficiencies noted in pre-application
inspection report have been corrected.
D. Installer shall notify manufacturer no less than 3 days
before starting application.
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver materials in original sealed containers, clearly
marked with manufacturer's name, type of material, and
batch number.
B. Inspect the materials upon delivery to assure that
specified products have been received.
C. Store materials where temperatures are not less than 45
degrees F (7 degrees C).
D. Use all means necessary to protect material before,
during, and after installation, and to protect work of
other trades.
1.7 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Comply with current Federal and State environmental
requirements.
NOTE ** Delete the following article if no warranties are
required, or if work is covered under the terms of
a general project warranty specified elsewhere.
You may edit the article to obtain a warranty from
the Contractor only, or to suit other project-
specific criteria.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Manufacturer Warranty: Supply materials manufacturer's
warranty against water intrusion, flaking, or peeling.
NOTE ** Contact manufacturer for warranty period based on
project requirements and select appropriate
subparagraph below.
1. Warranty Period: Five years from date of Substantial
Completion.
2. Warranty Period: Ten years from date of Substantial
Completion.
B. Installer Warranty: Warrant workmanship for a period of
two years from the date of Substantial Completion.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS

B. Requests for substitutions will be considered in
accordance with provisions of Section 01600.
2.2 MATERIALS
NOTE ** Consult with manufacturer for choice of masonry
stain based on project requirements; select
appropriate paragraph below.
A. Masonry Stain: Rainguard "Color-Lok opaque stain."
B. Masonry Stain: Rainguard "Color-Lok semi-transparent"
stain.
NOTE ** Consult with manufacturer for choice of water
repellent based on project requirements; select
appropriate paragraph below.
C. Water Repellent: Rainguard "Blok-Lok with Micro-Lok"
(V.O.C. compliant).
D. Water Repellent: Rainguard "XS with Micro-Lok" (solvent
base).
E. Water Repellent: Rainguard "Regular" with Micro-Lok
(V.O.C. compliant-water based).
F. Water Repellent: Rainguard "Super" with Micro-Lok
(V.O.C. compliant-water based).
G. Water Repellent: Rainguard "HD" with Micro-Lok (solvent
base).
H. Water Repellent: Rainguard "STD" with Micro-Lok (solvent
base).
I. Water Repellent: Rainguard "STD-E" or "HD-E" or "XS-E"
with Micro-Lok (V.O.C. compliant-solvent base).
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verify that surfaces to be coated are in proper
condition.
1. New substrates: Cured 30 days before application.
2. Cured substrates: Allowed to dry three to seven days
in clear warm weather following rainfall before
application.
3. Substrate moisture content: No higher than 15
percent as registered on an electronic moisture
meter.
B. Verify that voids in masonry joints or joints found to be
unsound or defective have been raked out and pointed with
mortar to create a joint of full-face shell thickness.
C. Where freezing conditions exist before application, allow
adequate time for building to thaw.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Thoroughly clean substrates of foreign substances, such
as dirt, efflorescence, and mortar spills.
1. Use "dry" cleaning method where practicable.
2. Allow three days minimum dry time in warm weather
before applying material if wet cleaning method is
utilized.
B. Protect windows and work of other trades against damage
by coating, whether to be coated or not.
C. Protect plant life against damage from coatings.
3.3 APPLICATION
A. Apply materials in strict accordance with manufacturer's
recommendations and when substrate surface temperature is
between 45 and 90 degrees F (7 and 32 degrees C).
1. Follow instruction in manufacturer's current
technical data sheet for general information and
coverage rates.
B. Spray apply water repellent using high-volume, low-
pressure spray equipment; allow to cure 24 hours before
application of masonry stain.
C. Spray apply masonry stain using airless spray equipment.
D. Clean all drips, runs, and overspray residue while still
wet.
3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Manufacturer's Representative shall inspect all treated
surfaces after work is complete to verify proper
application.
3.5 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
A. If damage occurs, immediately make all repairs and
replacements necessary at no additional cost to Owner.
B. During process of work, remove discarded materials,
rubbish, cans, and rags at end of each workday.
C. Correct any damage by cleaning and repairing or
replacing, as acceptable to Architect.
